LED Headlights – Complete Buyer’s Guide

There are many different types of LED headlights on the market and a lot of misinformation about them. This write-up is designed to give people a better-informed overview of how they work, the different types of headlights available, and their different purposes.

Fitting Instructions

Connection
All of our LED headlights have an H4 H/L connector. This means it has three terminals: one for earth, one for low beam, and one for high beam. Additionally, some models have one or two extra wires.

  • The models that have a separate wire for the DRL, position light, or park light are generally hooked up to the vehicle’s existing park light circuit.

  • The models that have two extra wires include both a DRL wire and an indicator wire. The indicator wire controls an amber light and should be connected to your vehicle’s existing indicator circuit.

Fitting into the Headlight Housing
LED sealed beams directly replace your original halogen sealed beam units and are held in by the front fascia and back assembly. This assembly secures the light into place. The exception is for headlights (some semi-sealed beams) with brackets that bolt onto the headlight assembly. LED sealed beams do not have these brackets built in, so they cannot replace vehicle-specific removable headlights with bracketed inner lights.

Earth-Switched Vehicles
Most vehicles are actively switched (earth, active low beam, active high beam). A few systems, such as older Toyota Land Cruisers and Hilux models, are negatively switched. In this case, polarity converters are required to change the polarity from earth-switched to actively switched. These plug in between your vehicle’s original connector and the LED headlight H4 connector. If unsure, consult an auto electrician.

ADR Approved vs ADR Compliant LED Headlights

ADR Approved
ADR Approved headlamps are asymmetrical RHD (right-hand drive) headlights for Australian vehicles that drive on the left-hand side of the road. They display an E-mark (E9, E27, etc.) and an ECE number. We hold ECE certificates for engineers covering our ADR Approved headlights.

ADR Compliant
ADR Compliant headlights are symmetrical, like standard sealed beam halogens. They must be aligned according to ADR regulations for low beam angles and also meet ECE requirements. Specification sheets are available for our symmetrical, universal LED headlamps.

Note
ECE Certification is a global UN standard for headlamps. It ensures lights have been tested and passed for visibility, durability, safety, and reliability. The E-mark shows where the certification was issued.

  • Symmetrical headlamps are universal for LHD or RHD vehicles.

  • Asymmetrical headlamps are specific to either RHD or LHD countries.

Be cautious:

  1. If a company advertises ADR Approved headlights, they must provide an ECE certificate.

  2. Do not buy an LHD asymmetrical headlamp for Australian use. These may be advertised as ADR Approved but are only legal in the USA.

Characteristics

Sizes
Aftermarket LED headlights come in 7-inch round, 4x6-inch, 5x7-inch, and 5 ¾-inch sizes. Check the depth behind your lamp before purchase. For example, VW Beetles have very little room behind their 7-inch rounds and require compact lights like the Classic Style or Triple Stack.

Cut-offs
Beam patterns vary. The Triple Stack has three rows of LED projector lenses, providing excellent high and low beam output and a broad light area. Truck drivers value the strong low beams that reduce eye shock and fatigue when auxiliary lights are switched off.

Lens Material

  • Polycarbonate (PC): superior impact resistance.

  • PMMA: higher light transmission and polishable for clarity restoration.

Voltage Parameters
Some lights support 9–32V DC (suitable for 12V or 24V). Others support 9–16V (12V only). Check specifications and consult an auto electrician if unsure.

Warranties
Most lights carry a 3-year or 5-year limited warranty. Damage from accidents is excluded.

CAN-Bus Compatibility
Most sealed beam headlights don’t need CAN-Bus support. However, if your vehicle’s ECU controls the lights, you may need CAN-Bus decoders or compatible LEDs.

EMC
Electromagnetic compatibility is important to prevent radio interference. Some models, like the Triple Stack, include built-in EMC drivers.

LED Types
We use high-quality Osram, Philips, and Cree LED chips depending on the optical engineering needs.

Environmental Protection
Most modern LED headlights are IP67-rated, with breathers to regulate pressure and condensation. Moisture can sometimes enter, but breathers allow clearing by temporarily removing them while the lights are on.
